California expands its K-12 system with free transitional kindergarten

  1. Free and subsidized childcare – and TK is childcare as much as it is education – is probably the last big welfare state expansion I would pursue. It allows both parents to stay in the workforce and maintain the skills to keep participating in the commercial economy. It eases the financial burden on parents, probably increasing birth rates by a small amount as well.

    I live in San Francisco, where families earning less than 200% of the median income (i.e. $291k/yr) are entitled to childcare subsidies. A family of three is entitled to a subsidy of $1500/mo for an infant or $1100/mo for a toddler, and it’s pretty huge for the families that receive it. The subsidies are even greater at lower income levels.
