Zack Polanski, the leader of of the Green Party of England and Wales, has called for a freeze in building new data centres, claiming high electricity and water usage. He says that local communities should be given greater powers to stop them being built.
Currently in the UK, data centres do not report their water usage. An estimate by the Water Research Consultancy said that in England (where 84% of the population lives), data centres made up 0.2% of the non-household water market. By contrast, the UK government estimates that one fifth of all UK water supply was wasted through leakage.
The UK government has rejected Polanski's assertions, saying that it had no plans to freeze new data centre construction, that data centres were critical to national security and computing power, and that data centres already have requirements to meet before being built.
