Trucking carriers have benefited from a steady supply of cheap labor from illegal immigrant drivers, but the consequences have sometimes been deadly. Since the start of 2025, at least 28 people have died and many more have been injured in 16 collisions involving drivers who had no right to be in the country.
Some of the drivers had overstayed visas, while others had entered the country illegally. Most did not speak English, and two did not even have the commercial driver’s license (CDL) required to operate a larger vehicle.
The drivers came from Haiti, Kyrgyzstan, China, Serbia and Cuba, with half originating in India. Many have either been detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or have an ICE detainer placed on them.
