A gun control article by a British newspaper that's… actually good???
Hard to believe, but the author(Meredith Dean) raises great points that if you can't get rid of the guns, promoting safety is the next best thing, which is unbelievably true and can be very easily turned into a successful bipartisan issue. Currently, we have like 500 million guns in the US, so you can't really put the genie back in the bottle, not even getting into the constitutional side of the debate.
Being against securing isn't pro-2A; it's just stupid, and making gun culture in the US have a much stronger trend towards responsible ownership would vastly reduce gun deaths that are caused by ill-acquired weapons.

Ok ngl, I originally read this article out of spite because oh boy I can’t wait to see what an older white woman from Pennsylvania has to say about the gun debate, but she actually kinda cooked. I believe in terms of practical, possible to implement measures when it comes to reducing gun deaths, this is one of the big ones, along with majorly cracking down on straw purchases and maybe having some sort of liability, like if you leave your Glock on the dashboard of your Ford F-150 with 20 billion 2A stickers on the back, and then someone busts the window while you’re in Arbies and a week later it’s used in a gang shooting, you should hold some legal liability for being a jackass and not properly securing your weapon.

This is something that really needs to be addressed through the courts so we can at least return to the first 230-ish year status quo of states having unlimited discretion subject to their own constitutions/courts to regulate guns
The 2nd amendment is clearly a structuralist amendment that should not be used to prevent state firearm regulation
It will never turn to a bipartisanship issue . NRA has the Republican Party on a chokehold. You cannot seriously believe that there is any change of rational calm debate with the republicans . Not after the 10s and the 20s .
I think a really straight forward gun law would be something that makes the owner of the firearm responsible for any crimes committed with that firearm.
Firearm stolen out of your car (most common way guns are stolen) and then its used in an armed robbery? Congrats pal you just caught a charge.
Teen stole it out of your night stand and shoots his friend showing it off? Yup thats involuntarily man slaughter.
It places ALL of the responsibility that you hear gun advocates preach about, actully on the owners of these firearms
I own many guns.
Every gun I have ever bought came with a free gun lock which I believe is mandated by law.
I think people should own safes and secure their guns but when you look at the school shooting epidemic and gun violence in general, a gun lock will save very few if maybe no lives. A pair of bolt cutters will easily clear a gun lock.
Safes and other storage devices better serve this purpose but to mandate a gun safe should be unconstitutional as it presents a barrier to the ownership that would prevent the poor from possessing guns.
Education and locks should of course be promoted but it’s not a cure to any societal illness
Nice article but I get the sense that the writer is a bit myopic with this approach + doesn’t understand the mistrust by gun owners that democrats validate with their actions.
Promoting safe storage by distributing gun locks is good as a stopgap for those who dont have a robust storage solution yet, but using that as a way to gain trust & closeness with pro-2A types with no mention of the failures of gun control policy is a good way to make people mistrust the lock-distributors. Why should someone trust the person who hands out cheap locks and then turns around & uncritically supports security theater policies & harassment of unproblematic gun owners? There needs to be recognition of the wrongs done + real olive branches extended.
– safe storage requirements + tax credits for qualified purchases of equipment
– replace the 4473 with a requirement for providing a valid document that demonstrates eligibility (a la the Swiss model) so as to achieve universal background checks while avoiding a registry
– remove mag capacity & other superficial feature bans e.g. AWBs implemented at various state levels
– pass the hearing protection act & short acts before that becomes already law.
That would turn gun owners as a bloc (~30-35% of voters) from voting 4:1 R to at least 2:1. Potentially a 8 point swing.
