The government of Kenya is going to try to protect local small businesses and hawkers from competition by migrants and foreigners, including those from China.
Kenya is a leader in regional integration as part of the East African Community (EAC), which includes 8 states in East Africa with a common passport and which is working towards freedom of movement.
But anti-immigrant attitudes in Kenya seem to be growing too, just as they have in South Africa and Botswana. A few months back a video of a Kenyan man harassing a Burundian migrant went viral. Burundi is part of the EAC.
The Kenyan President has said that as from next week (!) "… all [foreign] traders doing those small businesses should close them."
He has stressed that Kenya remains open to investment and trade from the rest of the world, but that small scale traders and hawkers need to be protected.
This is relevant to this sub because it concerns migration and freedom of trade.
