Giorgia Meloni’s government has become Italy’s longest-serving since World War II, reflecting unusual political stability for the country. Her Brothers of Italy party remains the largest, but Meloni’s success is increasingly challenged by Roberto Vannacci, a former general whose far-right party, Futuro Nazionale, has climbed to around 8% in polls.

Roberto Vannacci rose to prominence in 2023 after publishing a controversial book containing racist, homophobic, Islamophobic and antisemitic views. The backlash led to his removal from the army, but also made the book a bestseller and increased his public profile. He then entered politics, winning a seat in the European Parliament for Matteo Salvini’s League in 2024, before leaving the party and founding his own far-right party, Futuro Nazionale.

Futuro Nazionale’s recently published manifesto says “abortion is not a right” and calls for gay people to be banned from TV between 6am and 11pm so children aren’t exposed to what it describes as “homosexualist” content. It supports military education in high schools and a “remigration” plan to remove irregular immigrants and foreign nationals who commit crimes. On Ukraine, he opposes sending weapons and financial aid and has expressed a preference for Vladimir Putin over Volodymyr Zelenskyy

  2. I think we’ll be seeing Meloni doing a lot more campaign actions like what she did with Spain ending the free movement agreement due to the Ceuta incident. Meloni’s coalition is more or less polling at the same numbers they got in 2022 except for Lega, which is down a few points, so she’s in a decent position to hold the line and replicate her coalition. Though at the end of the day she is a right winger so I’m sure if she needs to she’ll just coalition with this guy and screw immigrants even harder.

Crazy how Italy just keeps spawning new forms of right wingism even worse than the last. Meloni looks like a reasonable moderate compared to him
