      Call me Ishmael. Some years ago—never mind how long precisely—having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me on shore, I thought I would sail about a little and see the watery part of the world. It is a way I have of driving off the spleen and regulating the circulation. Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth; whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in my soul; whenever I find myself involuntarily pausing before coffin warehouses, and bringing up the rear of every funeral I meet; and especially whenever my hypos get such an upper hand of me, that it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from deliberately stepping into the street, and methodically knocking people’s hats off—then, I account it high time to get to sea as soon as I can. This is my substitute for pistol and ball.

      I find it fascinating just how persuasive the concept of an imminent apocalypse is to people. I’ve met so many people that, much like early 2nd century christians, believe that a climate apocalypse is so near they don’t need to actually do anything meaningful about it other than complain.

      The same people were completely fine with the UK effectively having a ban on new onshore wind for 10 years.

      Annoys me when people say “a language is just a dialect with an army” as if linguists don’t generally ignore political claims when classifying Urdu/Hindi, Serbian/Croatian and Persian/Tajik/Dari as the same language

      My mother tested and bought a 40 cal handgun on her brother-in-laws recommendation. When I went home, she showed it off to me, and asked if I was able to work the slide. Yeah? She said she didn’t have the upper body strength to slide it.

      You know they let you test them out in the store right? Why the fuck did you buy it then?
