I am calling on the U.N. to adopt the Southside-up Map

The United Nations recently adopted a resolution to abandon the Mercator projection in favour of an Equal Area projection which shows the continents of Africa and South America correctly sized.

This is a welcome development, but it does not go far enough.

The current Northside-up map continues to perpetuate cognitive injustice against the peoples of the Southern Hemisphere and the Global South more generally.

Europe continues to be positioned above Africa on the map, with the implication of superiority. Likewise, North America continues to visually dominate South America even on the equal area map, perpetuating and visually justifying dangerous ideas of U.S. hegemony in the Americas.

It is time for a change. I hereby call on the United Nations to abandon Northside-up maps in favour of Southside-up maps.
