Down to just five parliaments: Kubicki’s FDP, with no chance of success, is set to lose its seat in the next state parliament.

The FDP’s string of election defeats continues. The Liberals are losing their seat in a third state parliament this year alone. However, according to party leader Kubicki, it is not up to the Liberals to "come to terms" with the result.

The FDP has suffered another defeat in the Saxony-Anhalt state election and is losing its place in the parliament in Magdeburg. "This is a bitter day for the entire party, and interestingly, it is also a bitter day for me," said Liberal leader Wolfgang Kubicki. "I would have liked a different result, but wishes do not always come true."

The FDP had previously been part of the state government in Saxony-Anhalt. Going forward, however, it will no longer be a factor in the state parliament. Projections by broadcasters ARD and ZDF place the party at 2.2 to 2.4 percent, well below the five-percent threshold.

The state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt was one of only two state parliaments in East Germany where the FDP still held seats. The Liberals remain represented only in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania—at least until the election in two weeks' time. According to polls, it is virtually certain that the FDP will fail to win seats in that state parliament as well.

"But that will not deter us, as Free Democrats, from our path of making the Free Democrats a significant political force once again," said Wolfgang Kubicki. The federal government must now reflect on its policies in Berlin. "It is now up to the Union to come to terms with the election result, not the Free Democrats," said the leader of the Liberals.

In the federal election last February, the party had already failed to re-enter parliament, securing 3.3 percent of the second votes. This downward trend continued into the current year; the party remained below the five-percent threshold in the elections in both Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate. Following the electoral defeats in the spring, the party leadership team led by Christian Dürr stepped down, and Wolfgang Kubicki took over.

The FDP is currently represented in five state parliaments. In addition to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the Liberals hold parliamentary group status in Bremen, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Schleswig-Holstein.
