The US backed T&T government continues to suppress internal opposition. The government has used a variety of methods to punish the Syrian-Lebanese community in Trinidad by weaponizing US visa approvals and indefinitely detaining prominent citizens under state of emergency laws. The current government has been one of the few strong allies of the Trump administration in the West Indies and provided support to the operation to remove Maduro in January.
