A proposal to expand National Service jobs — with levers for expanding it — in anticipation of AI job disruption for recent graduate and young workers

  2. I’m less concerned about jobs but rather how toxic and wasteful the job search will be for unemployed people in the AI age. The problem is IMO there isn’t really a job site for job seekers. All job sites are really for recruiters, employers and or b2b sales, the job seekers are just product for the parties above. The problem is solving this is basically impossible because of incentives and purchasing power.

  3. I agree that more national/public service is great, but it needs two things to work:

    1. Better salaries, few people are going to spend 1 to 2 years clearing trails in the Rockies or building houses for minimum wage

    2. Can this lead to better prospects for future jobs? It’s become a lot harder to do the boomer act of yesteryear where you get to fuck around in your twenties for a bit and then get a “serious” job. Many companies now hire starter/lower level roles only via internships you did at their company or as lateral hires from similar companies.

And if this is meant as a replacement for white collar work, how do you promote the replacement for a stable job is working for a government that may just decide to demonize you and fire you next time a Republican is in charge?
