From the study linked in the article, labor costs in Germany average about 3300 USD a vehicle, compared to around 600 for china and 770 for japan. For the US it’s 1340.
Clearly something went wrong in the German auto industry. Imo working hours are only one part of the equation. Working 5 more hours won’t cut the massive labor cost premiums German workers have.
