Basically, stop reading Flávio vs Lula as trump vs Biden. The Brazilian situation has many parallels, but it is not a 1 to 1
Lula is not Biden. Biden is a centrist milquetoast. No one “hated” biden seriously outside the hard right. Biden in 2020 was much less rejected than Trump.
Lula has an extremely high rejection after being in power for a very long time. Lula and anti-Lula has been Brazillian politics since around 2002. I cannot stress enough that to understand Lula vs Flávio, you must stop treating Lula as Joe Biden. Lula is an incredibly well known and extremely divisive figure with a very long history behind him.
The support for Flávio is not *for Flávio* it is *against* Lula and the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court in Brazil has essentially become a political battleground and Lula was heavily damaged by allegations against the court.
Minister Alexandre de Moraes in particular voted for himself to avoid a corruption investigation against himself, and ministers appointed by Lula were there helping him avoid those investigations. In specific, his wife had a contract with corrupt banker Daniel Vorcaro at around 130 million, his children were receiving credit cards from Vorcaro, Moraes was also seemingly instructing Vorcaro about the investigation and how to flee from arrest etc etc.
Flávio himself is extremely corrupt, but he Is not in power and his campaign strategy is to simply disappear. He is running a very discrete campaign. The electorate is not constantly receiving news on Flávio’s corruption but it is receiving news on the Supreme Court constantly and that tilted the vote in favor of Flávio against Lula. It is somewhat hilarious that Flávio is being pitched as an anti corruption vote when *we know* he was also in contact with Vorcaro and he has a freacking beach picture with Vorcaro’s hired goon, sicário. Look up the *dark horse* scandal, Flávio is corrupt *as hell*
But yes. Lula is being weighed down by a bad government high rejection and his own allies. Flávio is just riding the wave and wisely avoiding most of the mistakes of the right, that is, inflammatory remarks and alienating the electorate. Flávio has just shut the fuck up and let rejection to Lula increase.
Other factors that weaken Lula were his inability to deal with organized crime (his party, fairly or unfairly is associated with a sort of pro crime sentiment, that the criminals are “victims of society”), tax rises, corruption scandals and also the ban on bets (which, while necessary, probably lost him more votes then it gained)
Do you know anything about Lula? I don’t like the bolsonaro family but I understand why people don’t like lula

The more I read about all the “New World” countries (with the exception of Canada), the more I believe this is the root problem which will forever condemn them to belligerence and fragmentation:

His dad barely lost in 2022 and he’s perceived as less of a dipshit than his dad
