  1. SS:

India’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said trade talks with the U.S. had reached a plateau beyond which giving or taking might be very difficult.

The finance minister’s comments come just after U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer last week said a trade agreement was not ‘imminent’ even as the negotiations were ongoing.

Sitharaman’s comments mark the first time India has acknowledged the challenges it faces in closing the trade deal with the U.S. This adds to growing skepticism in India that a deal could be reached.

  2. India’s kind of close to reaching a Canada moment here. The government’s been quiet and patient through tariffs, threats and insults for 2 years but in the last week the Foreign Minister and Finance Minister have called out the USA openly which is pretty weird and not how India normally speaks about international issues unless we’re talking about Pakistan.

I read a couple threads here about the idea of India turning into another China or some enemy for America. The problem is it isn’t us, it’s America. We don’t want to replace them, we just want to do business and grow. Maybe not like China but like Europe, Japan and South Korea. And there’s America that’s talking about how this is the “most consequential strategic partnership of the 21st century” a couple years ago and then openly making nasty threats to destroy us with sanctions this year.

The problem isn’t that India is gonna be an enemy but that America keeps looking for enemies in friendly countries when they’re unable to beat their real enemies.
