Judge Navanethem Navi Pillay has won the Nobel Peace Prize, joining Nelson Mandela, FW de Klerk, Desmond Tutu and Albert Luthuli as the 5th South African to be awarded the Peace Prize.
She fought against Apartheid and has served as an ICJ judge.
She recently served on a body investigating the War in Gaza:
> Pillay headed the UN independent international commission of inquiry, which does not speak on behalf of the world body and that last year found genocide was occurring in Gaza.
> Pillay told Agence France-Presse at the time that her team had shared “thousands of pieces of information” with prosecutors at the international criminal court.
The awarding of this Peace Prize to a South African critic of the War in Gaza and to an ICJ judge will no doubt be interpreted as a signal from the Nobel committee in favour of international law and critical of Israeli actions in Palestine. Because President Trump cares so deeply about the Nobel Peace Prize, this could possibly be interpreted as a snub against him.
