Elon Musk and Palmer Luckey's new Pentagon roles raise ethics worries
Summary
Elon Musk and Palmer Luckey are co-leading Project Meridian, a 120-day Pentagon initiative announced in September 2026 by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Project Meridian: A Department of Defense study focused on the future of warfare, automated weaponry, artificial intelligence, robotics, and high-tech defense systems.

Conflicts of Interest
Given that both Musk's and Luckey's companies hold major multi-billion-dollar defense contracts with the U.S. government.
Palmer Luckey: Anduril Industries builds military drones that are used on land, sea and in the air and other related defense technologies. The company received its initial funding from tech billionaire and conservative political activist Peter Thiel.
The 34-year-old Palmer, whose company is backed by Joshua Kushner’s equity fund, has acquired manufacturers of underwater drones, UAVs, and space technology, has been already been voluble about his philosophy on warfare. Earlier this year, for example, he said he thought warfare in the second half of this century would involve “subterranean” conflict, with vehicles that can “move through he crust of the earth the same way that submarines move through the water”.
Elon Musk: SpaceX has secured over $8 billion in U.S. defense contracts in 2026 alone, according to government contract announcements.
Musk’s SpaceX has been a crucial contractor for US space programs since 2018, and in the second Trump administration his company has emerged as key player in Trump’s pet Golden Dome ballistic missile defense project, a phenomenally expensive effort that could cost as much as $1.2tn.

Concerns
There is a concern that Musk and Luckey's study would be guided by their own financial interests, said Richard Painter, a professor of corporate law at the University of Minnesota and former chief White House ethics lawyer in the George W. Bush administration.
"They all want to sell stuff," Painter said. "So if we go into it understanding that [Musk], like all the other contractors, he wants to make a lot of money selling AI to the Defense Department. Whatever he proposes, but it's not like he's doing it as a neutral public service."

Idk why people hate on Elon so much… him and plenty others are the pillar of continued economic growth in this country. AI will play a pivotal role in our countries future to ensure we stay as the economic powerhouse. Never understood the anti AI that one side of the aisle pushes, this will provide hundreds of thousands of jobs, make life easier for everyone, and will be beneficial in all sectors such as financial, engineering, healthcare, construction, etc. People like Bezos, Musk, Jenseng, Karp, are literally the future of how the United States shapes our and they are trying to ensure we win the AI race, never understood the hate they get.
