This is an interesting but upsetting story about the legacy of Apartheid and the resurgence of White Supremacy in the world.
Chris Hani was the leader of South Africa’s Communist Party in the 90s during the transition from Apartheid to Democracy.
He was assassinated by a Polish White Supremacist, Janusz Waluś, whose goal was to start a race war.
This episode is one of those insane “side quests” that Nelson Mandela had to resolve during the transition to democracy. Neo-Nazis in South Africa tried to sabotage the negotiations all throughout the transition. It was Mandela’s leadership that averted catastrophe.
Waluś was imprisoned for over 20 years, and released just a few years ago. He was deported to Poland. He has a far right fan base there, and there are rumours he may be asked to run for Parliament.
The story is interesting because it fleshes out the story of South Africa’s transition a little bit better for those who may not fully grasp what could have happened. u/remarkable_ores recently made a post in the DT about how pivotal Mandela’s leadership was.
It also shows the way White Supremacy today links back to White Supremacy in the past and across countries.
There was a book written a short while back about this whole episode and how Mandela averted a civil war:
