A must see documentary for conspiracy minded people:
Ifyou’re interested in how public opinion is manipulated, there’s a fascinating four-part BBC documentary by Adam Curtis called The Century of the Self (2002). It’s probably one of the most important documentaries I’ve watched about how modern society operates.
The film explores Edward Bernays, the nephew of Sigmund Freud, who took his uncle’s theories about the unconscious mind and figured out how to use them to influence entire populations.
Bernays realized that people don’t necessarily make decisions rationally. They’re driven by emotions, fears, desires, and subconscious impulses. He helped pioneer modern public relations by showing corporations and politicians how to exploit those impulses.
The documentary traces how these techniques evolved throughout the 20th century, transforming advertising, politics, and eventually democracy itself.
Instead of simply selling products based on what people need, corporations learned to sell identities and lifestyles. Instead of persuading voters through policy, politicians increasingly learned to appeal to their emotions and insecurities.
One of the film’s central arguments is that modern democracy has become less about what people actually want and more about manufacturing what they think they want.
And here’s what makes it particularly interesting today: Much of what we call manipulation, propaganda, or social engineering isn’t necessarily a secret conspiracy. It’s an industry with a documented history.
The film was made in 2002, long before social media algorithms, Cambridge Analytica, and today’s political information wars.
Watch it and ask yourself how much more sophisticated these techniques have become in the last 24 years.

The most interesting question isn’t whether we’re being manipulated. It’s whether we can recognize it when it’s happening.

For me, reading The Crowd by Gustave LeBon was an eye opener… especially in today’s internet centric society where, in theory, anyone can reach a crowd of millions in the matter of seconds. Psychology of the individual mind is important, but I believe that we’re not seeing the entire picture without taking the psychology of the group(s) into account as well.
