I recently found out that the new iPhone duo is available on one of the most used vendor (Alza) in Slovakia and Czech Republic and I noticed the option “Rent”.

The 77,49€ monthly can be paid in two and half years.

Imo is text book definition of “you will own nothing and you will be happy” type shit.

Also I found out that you can now RENT home appliances like washing machine, dryer machine, refrigerators etc.(that could be understandable if there is emergency and you need one of those appliances for short time but renting a phone is mind boggling for me)

  1. As long as you can still buy it, the rent option can still be useful and beneficial. No real downsides if it’s just an extra option.

  2. What is the difference between this and zero interest financing?

Do you not own the device at the end of the term?

EDIT: I only saw the second picture at first which isn’t in my native language, I see that “rent” is a separate option from the financing. That’s pretty crazy, especially that it’s like 70% of the cost of financing it.

I mean, back in the late 70s and 80s there was a massive store around called Rent Town USA.   It was all about renting appliances like refridgerators, TVs, etc.

    Nothing new under the sun.

The iPhone Duo is $2k for the *base model*. It goes up to $3,200. That’s why you can rent it, it feels much more approachable to a consumer’s brain.

  5. Who would buy a iPhone? I would take it for free and throw it in the trash. (I do have a few old iMacs I have Linux on. But they won’t let you install anything different on iPhone because the government pays them a lot of money for your data)

    It’s capitalism unleashed
Without regulations and open competition, they would charge us for oxygen if they could.

Insulin prices reached 500usd for a monthly supply.
People died, until regulations came to cap it at 35usd.
Insulin, the unpatented drug any company could make, they can agree to sell it for 1000usd if they could!

Insurance on cars, they push a law forcing you to have it, then hike the prices!

I’m not completely against the renting culture, sometimes it is useful. Obviously rent-a-center furniture is a scam targeting the most poor but for more luxury items it can be cool.

My wife, for example, uses a service called Rent the Runway. She works in an industry where everyone dresses up and as much as you want to bemoan it, that’s the way it is. Instead of spending many thousands of dollars on designer clothes that pile up, she gets a few outfits every few weeks or whatever. If you really like something you can buy it at a discounted price.

At first I scoffed when the clothing rental was dropped off but it’s genuinely saved us a ton of money.
