I mean yeah this literally is how authoritarian governments work, they rely on the impression that the vast majority of the population support or at least are neutral towards the regime, if there’s overwhelming displays of their unpopularity the entire facade collapses all the members of the regime start looking out for their own interests to ensure they don’t end up the wrong side of a political conflict. Usually the best way to do that is remove an unpopular leader, then act like you were just an a-political military officer/ servant of state and then retire.

As a Korean, I have to say, we have fought long and hard for this to happen. We had to shed so much blood in 1950, 1960, 1980 and 1987 to establish a functional democracy. It’s the painful victories and lessons we’ve learned from these struggles that we finally established this. Twice. Once in 2016 and once in today.

South Korea was a military dictatorship until 1988. Anybody who’s middle-aged or older remembers the bad old days. They don’t take democracy for granted.
