  1. Need to send in troops to take back Yosemite National Park! Can’t let the reds have the woods!

  2. Hey, looks like home : )

Oregon’s 5th congressional district (the lean D district in Oregon) is an interesting place. It’s got working-class suburbs of Portland, Salem, and Albany. Given the historic importance of agriculture and immigrant farm labor, many of those suburbs have large Latino populations. The district’s also got lots of little rural communities that used to be timber country and now rely primarily on tourism up in the cascades. Those communities are almost 100% white. In the little dangly bit, the district has also got most of Bend – a tourism and retirement community that’s one of the most expensive places to live in Oregon.

It’s the kind of district that requires a member to represent constituencies from very different communities. The lame-duck member from that district is a Republican – Lori Chavez-DeRemer. She was defeated by Janelle Sojururner Bynum, a democrat. Bynum’s win was close and the district, will likely continue to swing as the parties continue to hone their appeals to politically disengaged working class folks.
