Not sure what people expected tbh. Yeah, it’s obvious a sizeable chunk of Syrians must hate Russia for everything they did during the war, but they are just starting to govern, funding institutions, setting up the bureaucracy, intelligence and other many details. They really aren’t in a position to oust Russia or Iran, gotta play nice with everyone at the moment

Biden should be on the phone right fucking now with Jolani saying if Russia keeps their base, there will be no sanctions relief. They’ll still be on the terror list. Need that Russian base to go. But sadly Biden & Sulivan are too much of a pussy

I think their reaction (or lack thereof) to Israel’s incursion should show that at least for the moment, the new government is being super conciliatory to international players, probably because their overriding focus is consolidating domestically.

Yeah….. I suspect the capacity and ability of this base is greatly diminished. All the assets on the base are in striking range of FPV drones. Incidentally I have heard Ukrainians tourist have taken a key interest in Syrian history and tourism.

Eh give it time. And lots of money. The EU definitely has the financial power to more or less bribe the government to kick the Russians out

I was saying there’s likely to be some degree of reapproachment here with Russia and even potentially a bit with Iran
Obviously before they were big enemies because Russia was backing the SAA and SDF against HTS and SNA and doing quite a lot of bombing of hospitals and so on. But now that the power of the SAA evaporated and with it also much of the reason for SDF to partner with SAA & Russia, Russia has very minimal influence with any party in Syria to use against HTS but very valuable and very vulnerable bases important for the strategy in Africa that it would like to keep. Prime grounds for HTS to extract some kind of deal.
Russia can give some benefits that western countries are not willing to, ex. some sort of aid that can be directed against Israel’s occupation of Syria which US & co. would not help them out with since Israel is western aligned.
