I really don′t think you can compare these two; in 2004, military service was still treated as a premium for running for President. Kerry leaned a lot on his military record; it was a classic ″use your enemy strength as a weakness″ routine. How many people give a crap today who really did or didn’t serve in Iraq? The VP candidate, no less.
