In 2024, Tesla’s global sales declined for the first time in over a decade, with China being the sole major market to register growth. Sales in China increased by 8.8% compared to 2023, totaling 657,000 units and accounting for 36.7% of Tesla’s global deliveries. Despite this growth, it was insufficient to counterbalance declining sales in other regions, notably a 13.7% drop in Europe during the first 11 months of 2024. In the United States, Tesla’s largest market, sales also fell compared to 2023.

Concurrently, Chinese automaker BYD delivered 1.76 million electric vehicles in 2024, marking a 12.1% increase over 2023 and narrowing the gap with Tesla, which delivered 1.8 million EVs—a 1.1% decrease from the previous year. This trend suggests that BYD may overtake Tesla as the world’s leading EV seller in 2025.

Increased competition, particularly from Chinese and Korean EV manufacturers, along with reduced subsidies in Europe, have significantly impacted Tesla’s sales. Additionally, the Tesla Cybertruck, anticipated to boost sales in North America, has not met expectations, contributing to the overall downturn.

Aren’t they stuck in a deflationary spiral where they continue to produce things nobody wants, so they have to cut price, but to keep the books solvent, they have to sell more widgets, thereby further cutting price? And on and on it goes.
