    I’m sorry but “You have to enthusiastically love shock art or else you’re encouraging a culture of censorship” is a deranged worldview and the implicit conclusion of this.

    Making shock art inherently means *you are going to shock*, and free speech means people will have the freedom to say that your shock art is tasteless. There’s no courage or value behind producing or publishing shock art if nobody is allowed to express their shock and distaste for it.

    I’m allowed as a private citizen to dislike Tom Green. Jimmy Carter is allowed as a private citizen to dislike the Satanic Verses. People expressing their distaste as private citizens for your art is not endorsing the censorship of it or else film critics would be endorsing the censorship of mediocre Hollywood films.
