I am sure the parallels to Putin’s rhetoric about Ukraine are obvious, and given Aliyev’s hatred of Armenians, referring to Armenia as ‘West Azerbaijan’, and the attempts to rewrite history to claim that Armenians are not native to the region and that it is instead historically Azeri land, this is a very worrying pattern.
So far there are no reports of military build-up, at least as far as I am aware, so this may well be Aliyev testing the waters, especially with Trump soon to take office. Ultimately though Aliyev will do as much or as little as he is able to, although the destruction of Armenia as a state seems to be his ultimate dream.
