The Trump administration is now targeting NOAA. They likely have two goals, according to Project 2025. First, they want to dismantle some of the publicly available data and weather forecasts which compete with private sector alternatives. Second, they want to eliminate research related to climate change.
To put it in a broader scientific context, NOAA is responsible for much of the data meteorologists, oceanographers, and climate scientists rely upon to do their work. If we start turning off operational capabilities, or firing the researchers who keep those products up to date, then we will no longer have eyes on the atmosphere and oceans.
