A group of centrist House Democrats met privately with Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) and asked him to keep giving them room to vote for GOP messaging bills, Axios has learned.
Democrats see an opportunity to win back the House majority in 2026, but the swing-district lawmakers who are key to that effort feel they need to be able to break away from their party at times to secure reelection.
Jeffries huddled for about 30 minutes Friday with the 10-member Blue Dog Coalition, a group of the most centrist Democrats in the House.
The discussion around winning back the majority, according to one House Democrat who was present, centered on giving centrist and swing-district Democrats "flexibility to take certain votes."
Democrats' losses in the 2024 election appear to have made them more sensitive to the downsides of voting against what are known as "messaging bills."
The lawmakers told Axios they feel Jeffries — known as a coalition builder who tends to lead with a light touch — has been receptive to their pleas.

This shouldn’t be an issue. Even when Pelosi was minority leader you had plenty of swing & red-district Dems voting for GOP messaging bills (And she’s considered to have a stronger hold on the united Dem caucus than Jefferies)
On one hand, the messaging bills that don’t actually do anything are whatever
On the other hand, this is a bad look for a party that already looks impotent as shit

As long as they’re not the critical votes to passage I don’t see why it matters

Trump won a plurality of the vote. GOP has a mandate to pass bills. Would I personally love if they failed? Of course. But the time to do something was Nov 5th and our side failed.
Moderate Dems (at least in messaging) are the reason we won in 2018, 2020, stopped the bleeding in 2022, and did decently in congressional elections in 2024. We need their seats.
Really love how Republicans get rewarded when they engage in blanket obstructionism but Democrats are compelled to play bipartisan. Then we have to spend the year or two before an election wondering why our messaging is incoherent and voters have no idea what we stand for.
