Libertarianism is built around the reality of self-ownership ( you own yourself ). To deny this means that someone has a higher claim on your body ( slavery ).
Again, no other person or collective or institution owns your life, your liberty or your property and you have no claim on the lives, liberties and property of others
Because we live over a period of time our rights manifest themselves in different periods of time. These are Property ( Past ), Liberty ( Present ), Life ( Future )
To lose you Property ( the product of your Life and Liberty ) is to lose your past
To lose you Liberty is to lose your Present
To to lose your life means you lose your Future
Again, Your property is the product of your Life and Liberty ( Time, Energy, and Talents ). It is that part of nature you turn to valuable use
Property can be acquired 2 ways
Morally – when parties exchange property voluntarily. It is moral because both side are better off ( both are winners ) because of the transaction otherwise they would not have done it
Immorally – when one party ( either directly or indirectly through a proxy ( like government ) takes from another. It is immoral because the side who took benefits at the cost of the other side losing
The definitions of this immoral taking is the following :
To take one’s Property is theft
To take one’s Liberty is slavery
To take someone’s Life is murder
These examples of immoral taking are the same whether these actions are
Done by one person acting alone ( crime )
By the many acting against the few ( democracy )
By bureaucrats/oligarchies (authoritarianism )
You have the right to protect your Life, Liberty, and justly acquired Property from the forceful aggression of others
You have the right to ask others ( right of association ) to defend your Life, Liberty, and Property
But you do not have the right to initiate force against the Life, Liberty, and Property of others and so , you do not have a right to designate some person ( like government or a criminal gang ) to initiate force on others on your behalf
You have the right to have someone speak for yourself ( elect ) but you don’t have the right to have that person speak ( impose your beliefs and wants ) for others no matter how they are selected because they are just human like you with the same set of rights and limitations that you possess on the Life, Liberty and Property of others
These officials ( government ) have no right to
To take one’s Property (theft)
To take one’s Liberty (slavery)
To take someone’s Life (murder)
So that means these officials (government) cannot impose your vision on others and they cannot use officials ( government ) you impose a vision on you
Those who try to validate this are practicing intellectual sloth and history shows that such non-consensual visions yield unintended and harmful consequences
Since you own your life, you are responsible for it which means you choose your own goals based on your own values. The success or failure of those goals is on you
Remember : Failure is a necessary incentive to learn and to grow
Your action on the behalf of others or their action on the behalf of yourself is virtuous ( moral ) only when it is derived from voluntary, mutual and explicit consent, because virtue can only exist when there is free choice and the basis for a truly free society which will always be the most practical, humanitarian and ethical
Problems in the world that arise from the initiation of force by governments have a solution. That solution is for the people to STOP asking government to initiate force on their behalf
Evil does not only arise from evil people but also from good people who tolerate the initiation of force as a means to achieve their own ends
i.e – the road to hell ( evil ) is paved with good intentions
i.e – the ends never justify the means getting there
It is through this manner that good people have empowered evil people
