Please note that the title is “taken for questioning”, but I chose to slightly editorialize it, as I believe distinction should be made between him being asked to appear for questioning, and him being literally stopped in traffic and detained. Not to mention that there are now protests and police barricades around the building of the prosecution where he’s been questioned.
> Far-right populist Călin Georgescu has been detained by police as part of an inquiry by prosecutors into election campaign fraud, after he came from nowhere to win the first round of last year’s presidential election.
>
> Georgescu was stopped in traffic in the capital, Bucharest, on Wednesday.
> Two right-wing populist parties said they were mobilising their supporters to head for the prosecutor’s office, where Georgescu was taken for questioning.
>
> Romanian reports said police were erecting barriers around the building and that dozens of demonstrators had gathered to protest.

In a few minutes Elon Musk and JD Vance will start screeching about authoritarianism in Europe.

From all I have seen this seems like a severe but necessary step, and I honestly don’t want to know what happens if he’s allowed to run again in the makeup election in a few months.
At the same time, though, whatever happens to Georgescu, it’s deeply concerning how vulnerable Romanian democracy (and not just Romanian, unfortunately) is to such aggressive outside interference. A concentrated psyops helped propel this man from a total nobody to a presidential frontrunner nearly overnight. It’s frightening to see just how little it takes, and how woefully unprepared we are to defend ourselves against these kinds of hybrid attacks by the world’s autocracies.
