House Appropriations Chair Tom Cole (R-Okla.) told reporters on Wednesday that “substantial differences” remain between both parties as Congress stares down a March 14 deadline to pass legislation to keep the government running.
Democrats have pressed for assurances that a bipartisan funding deal that emerges from talks won’t be undercut by Trump amid his Department of Government Efficiency’s (DOGE) sweeping operation to reshape the federal government.
Following the meeting, Johnson also took aim at Democrats, accusing his colleagues across the aisle of making “completely unreasonable conditions” in funding talks.
“They want us to limit the power of the executive branch,” he argued. “They want us to stipulate in the appropriations vote for the first time in history that certain agencies in the executive branch would have to have a specific number of employees.”
“All sorts of just unreasonable, what I think are unconstitutional, demands,” he said. “There’ll be a violation of separation of powers. So we’re pretty far apart right now, but it is not because they’re Republicans. It’s because of the Democrats.”
As both chambers continue to run behind in their funding work, lawmakers have said a stopgap of some kind is necessary to prevent a shutdown next month.

Look, I don’t profess to be a constitutional scholar but how could it be unconstitutional for Congress to pass statutes that mandate the number of employees an executive agency must have?

That sounds like nitpicking and hyperbole.

Trump is not shrinking the government, he’s dismantling the bureaucracy that makes government work. Shrinking government means reduce unnecessary government intervention on people’s lives, not crippling the government’s function where intervention is needed.

What was that? I thought they passed a spending bill? Why was there so much news about that if it wasn’t the spending bill? I like to think I’m pretty keyed in to capitol hill and I don’t understand what’s going on.
So how long are thinking it takes for the dems to cave while getting nothing in return?
Okay, if Republicans don’t like the concessions Democrats are asking for in exchange for their votes, THEY CAN PASS THE BILL THEMSELVES. They have a majority in both houses of Congress. They don’t need a single Democratic vote to pass a bill. If they fail to do so it’s on them.
I’m so tired of the media reporting everything through the lens of it being the Democrats’ responsibility to rescue Republicans from their own incompetence and intransigence.

Democrats really shouldnt even bother with trying to get ‘assurances’. Republicans have both houses. Let them figure it out. They will stab you in the back the minute any ‘bipartisan’ budget passes
