Let’s set the tone with this one, no talk about a political union or this somehow leading us to being a world superpower. It’s never been realistic.
However, something like Canada and the UK simply joining the existing Trans-Tasman Travel Arrangement that Australia and New Zealand have? It’s realistic, doable, and beneficial. The Conservatives and Liberals agree on making this happen with official party policies adopted in support. We share core values, government systems, and a common language with the other three countries. Our relationship with the rest of the group remains more than a historical relic. We still share passport databases, an intelligence network, and keep all our military equipment standardized to each other. This is a very close group of countries already, and there are benefits to simply letting citizens have some more mobility between us. We can recognize qualifications, boost investment in each other’s markets, and give youth a lot more educational opportunities. None of these things block us from closer EU relations and there’s nobody else we can realistically pursue all this with.
The only thing we lack is political will at this point, but having mainstream media talking about CANZUK again is already moving us over that hurdle. Let’s just get it done, along with building all our other relationships globally.
