Why China’s clean energy need not fear US tariffs : Around 47% of Chinese cleantech exports went to the Global South in 2024, a record-high share and close to matching exports to developed countries for the first time.

Chinese cleantech exports to the developing world really blows out the “muh subsidies” argument,

those countries cant afford to subsidize the sales of solar, batteries and EVs to the extent Developed countries do

    so there are 2 possibilities:

    1. Chinese cleantech is nowadays so cheap it can compete with fossil fuels and other cleantech even in the developing world
    2. Chinese solar, EVs, batteries etc. arent that profitable yet, so the extra sales are due to Chinese government subsidizing local production to overproduction levels

the second scenario is even worse for US. I**f China is subsidizing its industry so that the average family in Pakistan and Nigeria can buy cheap Chinese solar panels, then China is doing the equivalent of foreign aid, except with a far bigger effect**

**back in 2023, 20% of Pakistani households surveyed reported owning solar panels**

**in 2024 solar panel imports doubled compared to 2023**

**80-90% of those are made in China, if not close to 100%**

China could unironically be a bigger force for good on the world stage nowadays than US, and it will remain so unless they invade a neighboring country

Conversely Chinese solar panel imports have fallen in india since 2023. The amount of solar energy we produce has still grown exponentially, and so has solar penetration.

This is because we tariff these Chinese exports at 40% and incentivise domestic manufacturing as well as consumption. And surprisingly it works and domestic manufacturing is soaring.
