Senate Democrats say the six-month government funding resolution that passed the House Tuesday is a “horrible” bill, but there’s growing sentiment within the Senate Democratic conference that it would be too risky to block the legislation and risk a government shutdown that could drag on for weeks.
Senate Democrats battled behind closed doors Tuesday over how to handle the House bill, with a number of Democrats — especially those in swing states — arguing that a government shutdown must be avoided, even if it means reluctantly voting for a House GOP-drafted bill.
Several centrists warned that there’s no clear end game for ending a government shutdown if Democrats defeat the House-passed measure, which would increase defense spending by $6 billion, boost funding for border security and cut non-defense programs by $13 billion.
The bill passed the House 217-213 Tuesday afternoon with only one Democrat voting in favor. But the political calculus is different for Democrats in the Senate because their votes will be needed to avoid a shutdown.
Senate Republicans control 53 seats and would need at least eight Democratic votes to reach the 60-vote threshold needed to overcome a filibuster. Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), a staunch fiscal conservative, says he would vote against the stopgap measure for not doing enough to cut the deficit.
Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) said he will vote to keep the government open, even if he’s not a fan of the House-passed funding stopgap.
Sen. Angus King (Maine) didn’t say how he would vote on the six-month House-passed stopgap but signaled he’s worried about the potential outcome if Senate Democrats defeat it.
Senate Democrats said they would continue to discuss their options on Wednesday.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune (D-S.D.) warned that Democrats would bear full responsibility for shutting down government if they block the House bill.
Several vulnerable Democrats declined to say how they will vote on the measure once it comes over from the House.

“Both parties are the same” people are going to feel so vindicated.
look at my party dawg, we’re so fucked 💀
If republicans have the votes can’t dems not filibuster and then vote no when it goes to the floor?
And is there a reason the dems don’t have their own budget proposal? I get they can’t pass it but surely it’s better to say “we voted no on the GOP’s terrible budget, and wanted to do x,y,z with our budget instead. Enjoy the fell for it again award”

Same energy as “mom and dad say Uncle Jack has had too much to drink and can barely stand up, but taking his car keys away would cause a fight and ruin Thanksgiving.”
Miserable cowards.
I fucking hate these cowards
Alas, their action is definitely not satisfying their bases, and their manuever may cost them blue tsunami next year.
People who voted D or even D-leaning independents aren’t impressed with their congressman/congresswomen actions, and it’s likely to keep growing.
It’s suffice to say that congressional Democrats are living total different with D-voters, or even D-governors.
fuck them, party needs a new coalition that shows real opposition to take over and purge these pieces of shits
So Fetterman is a yes but they need 7 more Dems.
Chuck Schumer is a bitch. Primary is old soft ass. Was fucking carried by Pelosi his entire career Jeffries did the actual hard part and he fumbles it. This is our only chance to meaningfully stand up to trump and get any concessions but they are too scared. He either is so out of touch he doesn’t know the anger this will cause in the base or doesn’t care either way it’s unacceptable
On one side I’m furious they aren’t taking a stand, on the other side there is a legit concern that Musk does want the government shut down. Idk I would probably vote no but I’m not going to pretend that this is such a cut and dry decision either
If Rand Fucking Paul filibusters the terrible funding bill while the Dems sit there.
Time for Schumer and Durbin to go.
If you have a Democratic Rep or Senator, call them and ask for them to support an effort to oust Schumer. No, the reps don’t vote in the Senate but we need all Democrats to understand both that Schumer needs to go and Democrats need to stand up.
What did Republicans concede to Democrats to earn their vote. What did Democrats get out of this? Did Republicans consult with Democrats when writing this bill? Of this is a Republican bill passed with exclusively Republican input, why should Democrats vote for it?
Senate Democrats that vote for this need to be ready to be primaried. They need to know we are furious with the party. So Senate Democrats think they can ignore the base to theoretically win a couple of independents? If they think that is good math, they can think about getting a different job. I can’t believe Democrats can see how furious we are, see how low their approval is, and still think it’s acceptable to continue business as usual. Every Senate Democrat that votes for that bill is responsible for everything that comes from DOGE afterwards. It’s essentialy a rubber stamp of what DOGE is doing.
Won’t cutting Medicaid do more damage to republicans than a shutdown anyway? No need to doom and gloom yet
Yikes Schumer doesn’t look great from that angle.
As much as I want Republicans to embarrass themselves, I do agree that there’s not a real endgame to a shut down for Democrats.
It would have been an easier decision if they’d spent this time messaging attainable demands, shorter CR and appropriations bills. The handcuffs on trump was never going to happen, impoundment is illegal and it’s a court decision one way or the other what happens with that.
That said, I don’t think they’d be blamed for it and if they were I don’t think it would matter. Does anyone really vote on shutdown politics? Republicans got blamed for all the shutdowns I can remember and are still the party of “fiscal responsibility”.
“Senate Democrats appear willing to give away democracy”
PRIMARY ALL OF THEM
Call your senators now and tell them that if they let this pass, you promise to vote them out. Even if it means voting for a Republican.
Thank god. It would be a potential disaster if the Dems shut down the government. Not just for public opinion but also for enabling Trump to shrug and say “fuck it, a shutdown makes it easier for us to not pay federal workers and try to push them out”
Dems need to fight smarter, not harder. The base will be enraged but they don’t matter, Dems can never afford to feed the base like the GOP can feed their base
If Schumer was the spd leader in the 1930s, he would have voted for the enabling act
Republicans have shut down government multiple times and how much have they suffered for it? They only control the presidency and both houses of Congress.
