I don’t have access to the article so I’ll just throw out my opinion, for what little it is worth. I never thought that the USA would end up like China. For years I’ve thought that a worst case scenario for America in the long run was we would end up taking a lot of the worst aspects of Brazil, Russia, and South Africa and mixing them together.
A large and very diverse population with a lot of mutual hostility between major demographic groups governed by a very corrupt and incompetent oligarchy. A stagnant economy where the best way to make a living will be by exploiting an oversized government for rent seeking, bribery, favoritism in hiring etc.
