Germany’s SPD backs Merz coalition, names leader Klingbeil finance minister

  1. 84% of SPD members approved of the coalition agreement. That is higher than for the last 2 votes. That was 76% in 2013 and just 66% in 2018.

    Unsurprisingly, Lars Klingbeil is set to become finance minister. It was always unlikely but I had the tiniest sliver of hope that Jörg Kukies would stay finance minister because I surprisingly found him to have good positions regarding capital markets etc. But realistically that was never going to happen.
