Romania’s far-right candidate clear favourite in presidential run-off

  1. As much as Dan aligns more with my views and this sub’s, this is why I was pretty disappointed Dan won as the non-far right guy.

I’m not an expert on Romanian policies by any means, but my understanding is Dan is considered to be a liberal while the two other major non-far right candidates he beat, Antonescu and Ponta, are center/center right. These latter two had 33% of the vote total, which practically all of them would have to go to Dan to carry him over the finish line, but only a third have to go to Simion to give the far right a win (assuming turnout is the same). From what we’ve seen in the past decade, center right voters are quite comfortable voting fascist for their own pet issues or fears rather then voting liberal for greater causes.

I think had Antonescu (the guy the government wanted and was beat out by Dan by just 87,000 votes) become the non-far right candidate this election would probably be a wrap tbh. The center right voters of his bloc and Ponta would definitely coalesce under him, and Dan’s voters would certainly have voted Antonescu, if at least to keep Simion out
