Berkeley’s Zoning Adjustments Board signed off on the project in February.

But a man named Zaden Lipman — who said he grew up in San Francisco and now lives on the East Coast, but has “a long-standing affinity for Berkeley” — filed a hand-written appeal in March that sought to overturn the board’s decision, arguing the project and others like it threaten the city’s “culture and lifestyle.”

“I fear impacts from complications of these large buildings have the potential to forever alter the ethos and livability of this great city,” Lipman wrote. He called for the City Council to reject the proposal or hold more public hearings about it.
