A new champion has joined the global fight against malaria – drones!

Local authorities are integrating drones into their campaigns to prevent malaria outbreaks, by patrolling wetlands and riverbanks in areas difficult to access for humans – using AI tools, they are able to identify the most probable breeding grounds for mosquitoes and bomb them with larvicides to prevent infestation before the pests can lay eggs.

Pioneered by Japanese startup SORA Technology, founded around the personal experience of Yosuke Kaneko in Africa, where 90% of the global deaths from malaria occur, the initiative is being experimented in Ghana and Sierra Leone and shows good early results.

Relatively low-cost, the initiative could be replicated across the continent to support the termination of mosquito infestations before they can occur, supplementing the global efforts in curing the disease and preventing mosquito-to-human transmission.
