Democrats pay too much attention to the news and it’s easy to vote Republican of you don’t think about politics are not the ground breaking insights this author thinks they are.
But yes, I will go outside and touch the requesit grass.

Perhaps they should also ditch the focus groups while they’re at it

This is great. Totally nailed how the jre of the left is impossible. What they didnt discuss is how being the party of political junkies is exhausting to normies.

Did I miss the part where he cites a study showing that Republicans have more hobbies than Democrats?

Yeah, I can really relate to this ngl, studying polisci turned me into a huge politics nerd and the current Trump era has dialed my political neuroses up to 11. I go out of my way to try not to work politics into every conversation, but my success thus far has let’s just say been somewhat limited

Uh what? My experience with the right has been that their entire persona revolves around their politics. They have to bring that shit up every time, no matter the situation.

I don’t think obessessing about coffee beans and burr alignment are gonna resonate with normies though

Democrats really should have pushed how they aren’t the ones trying to censor/ban all our hobbies like video games and anime.
I mean ffs, they even want to ban lego because they think its “satanic”.
“But to win over people who aren’t already political junkies—say, even a small fraction of Rogan’s audience—it’s important to recognize that his political credibility comes in large part from the fact that he doesn’t think of himself as political.”
This is key. Most people distrust politicians and political pundits, and don’t enjoy talking politics. They like to spend their leisure time on activities and hobbies that make them forget their cares. It’s true IRL, and it’s true online.
But political junkies and culture warriors have a way of colonizing every online space and turning it into a rally or a war zone. It can’t be emphasized enough that this pisses off normies. And the snarky retort that “EVERYTHING is political, man” is doubling down on unlikability. Everything is political only to miserable nerds.

> Democrats should also double down on their last remaining cultural edge—traditional celebrities such as Taylor Swift and Beyoncé, who both endorsed Harris in 2024. When celebrities endorse a candidate on social media, they reach millions of voters who might not otherwise consume much political content. Even though the Swift and Beyoncé endorsements were clearly not enough, the strategy still holds promise. The challenge for Democrats is how to get even more exposure to that audience. Imagine, in 2026 or 2028, entertainers from across genres and fandoms lending their platforms to long, personal conversations that get past campaign talking points and allow candidates to connect directly with their fans. It would be the kind of opportunity to reach disengaged voters that no TV ad or well-attended rally could replace.
This seems very suspect to me. These celebrities are tightly produced, billion dollar enterprises. You’re never going to get ‘long, personal conversations’ with Beyoncé or what have you. And nobody will see an endorsement from a billionaire like Taylor Swift and think it makes a politician seem *more relatable*.
