Generally the point of a symbolic retaliation is to offer your opponent an offramp to deescalate. I’m not sure what the calculus is when you take the offramp but then mock them for how deliberately weak their retaliation was. (this is a meme, there is no calculus at work, trump’s doing this because he’s stupid)
Trump didn’t openly mock them after the “retaliation” for Suleimani’s killing was so weak, and now the stakes seem much higher. Oh well!

People have been talking about civil war ever since Trump first got elected, and now we finally have it — a relatively civil war.
Fair play to both sides for telling the other where and when they’re going to be lobbing bombs. Wish the Russians would do that before sending cruise missiles at kindergartens.
