Trump talks tough but he’s a *very* shitty negotiator that prioritizes flashy personal victories that make him look good over actual practical results, like the trade deal with Vietnam showed, if there is a deal with China it would almost certainly end up being one where China gets almost all of the good stuff while looking like a equitable deal to someone who knows little about economy.

Should just title it “the fantasy of grand bargains in general”
I’ve endlessly heard a parade of “realist” commentators talking about these “grand bargains” that the west should make with Russia, Iran, China, and a host of other random actors
They effectively never happen, never come close to happening, and seem to go at odds with how the IR scene actually functions, but are effectively reflections of their own desires and values that they seek to impose on the world stage by framing it as a “realist” point of view

I mean the post-bullshit stance of both China and America is “we’d love to work together, but only if you agree to let the Taiwan issue go my way”.
Normally, at least.
Trump seems to not care for Taiwan but just feels like messing with China for unrelated boomer reasons.
