Nigeria’s Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar publicly rejected US calls to African countries to take in Venezuelan deportees, including convicted criminals, a few weeks after the impoverished and war-torn South Sudan agreed to take in 8 immigrants expelled from the United States.

Tuggar accused the US of “putting considerable pressure” on third countries to accept deportees whose home countries refuse to accept their repatriation – the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday that the Trump administration was pushing for the deportation scheme to be accepted by the five countries hosted yesterday in a US-Africa summit at the White House: Mauritania, Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia and Gabon.

The second Trump administration has generalized the large-scale deportation of foreign nationals to third countries when repatriation was either prevented or delayed; hundreds were sent to El Salvador, including some in defiance of court orders.

Simultaneously, the United States announced on Thursday [sweeping changes to US visa policy](https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cx23ywg9w82o) regarding four African nations: Cameroon, Ethiopia, Ghana, and Nigeria. Invoking “reciprocity”, the US will now exclusively deliver single-entry visas with a validity of up to three months – with the exception of immigrant and diplomatic visas.

A spokesman for the Nigerian presidency contested the US’ use of “reciprocity”, pointing out that Nigeria offers multiple-entry visas for up to five years to US citizens.
