I know most people don't like to hear this and they get all high and mighty, talking about "dehumanising" people. But the reality is we live in a world where the vast majority of people are soulless, otherwise the world couldn't be as it is. Most people are essentially biological automatons, and you can take this literally or metaphorically. It works either way.
There are basically two types of people on earth and they are completely different types of consciousness inhabiting similar physical bodies. For those who have a hard time accepting this, just take psychopaths as an example. You can think it's mean and dehumanising to call people psychopaths, and yet there are actually people who will kill you and your whole family and feel nothing but joy and excitement. "Non-player characters" are essentially the less violent and more common version of psychopaths.

What you wrote is kind of a pessimistic, fatalistic approach.
I personally believe we can have a positive effect on one another.
One candle can light hundreds and thousands of other candles.
Gotta light your own wick first though.

I feel exactly what you’re saying here. It could also be that some that appear as NPC’s are spirited beings (small number), but are so suppressed due to trauma, that they appear or mimic NPC behavior.

Its not that those individuals are “soulless” but its more of a stage that we must go through. Like the cycle of a butterfly, we must at some point be the worm/Caterpillar to then be the butterfly.
