Half of the population wants to remain, half wants independence. It’s a really messy situation, but I don’t think this new deal is bad at all. New Caledonia needs support from the French state, they would be worse off without it, but they also deserve to be their own state.
This deal checks both boxes, I hope the referendum passes and the violence we’ve seen doesn’t reignite.
