The Trump administration has decided to destroy nearly $10 million in contraceptives rather than send them to ten countries that had been picked as priority beneficiaries under now-slashed USAID programs: Burkina Faso, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mali, Ethiopia, Nigeria, Tanzania, Timor-Leste, Senegal, Kenya and Sierra Leone.
The drastic, wasteful decision is a result of the Trump administration’s dismantling of USAID, as well as prior legislation prohibiting the US from giving aid to organizations providing or easing acces to abortion. Spokespersons for the State Department argued that rebranding USAID goods would cost millions and that their expiration dates were close, although congressional aides who visited the warehouses where the goods are stocked argued they were fine to use until 2027.
Democratic Senators Jeanne Shaheen (NH) and Brian Schatz (HI) denounced “unacceptable waste of US taxpayers’ dollars” and introduced legislation to prevent the destruction of the stocks.
