The new UNC government elected in April under Kamla Persad-Bissessar has declared a State of Emergency, the second state of emergency in 2025 for the twin island republic. Both declared in response to the high rate of murders and violent crime plaguing T&T.
Earlier this year while in opposition, the UNC criticized the previous State of Emergency for being authoritarian overreach by the then ruling government.
