TOKYO — The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is expected to lose a significant number of seats in the July 20 House of Councillors election, according to preelection polls by the Mainichi Shimbun and exit polls by Kyodo News.
Vote counting is now underway after polling stations closed at 8 p.m. on July 20.
The LDP’s junior coalition partner Komeito, defending 14 seats this time, is also unlikely to maintain its current standing, meaning that the ruling LDP-Komeito coalition will struggle to retain a majority. Meanwhile, the main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan (CDP) is expected to increase its strength from its preelection count of 22 seats, and both the Democratic Party for the People (DPFP) and the new right-wing populist party Sanseito are projected to make substantial gains.
House of Councillors members serve six-year terms, with the chamber having a total of 248 seats. Elections are held every three years for half of the seats. Including a by-election for a noncontested seat vacancy in the Tokyo constituency, 125 seats were up for grabs in this election.

Honestly just glad that the gains aren’t all going to the far right and at least some are going to the left opposition.
