A paper I read from NBER said that investing money in a national energy grid would be a massive boon to US long-term productivity growth, primarily because it helps smooth out energy consumption and allows the easier transmission of green energy from states that can run a large surplus due to immutable geographical distances to those states that don’t have it(essentially transmitting solar from Arizona’s deserts to California or New York as a crude example). A 1$ investment in a national energy grid would have an NPV of something like 2$ IIRC.
