US lifts some Myanmar sanctions, says no link to general’s letter to Trump

You know… I PARTIALLY believe them. I don’t think it was as simple as Trump being “wait I heard the junta leader praised me in this very beautiful letter; time to remove sanctions but only remove a very few amount of sanctions”. I think that letter was just what got Trump’s attention. Someone told him about the response and they got to talking. Someone told him about minerals and then it went from there. I imagine he was also told how their president that was overthrown in a coup that triggered this civil war was pretty close to China (she kind of was) and Trump didn’t like that (ignoring that the junta also has a decent relationship with China) and we already know Trump doesn’t give a fuck about human rights. So I do think that praising letter is what got Trump’s attention. But that doesn’t the sole determinant of the sanctions relief. Because if it was, I seriously doubt Trump would only remove sanctions on a tiny number of complicit entities. I think Trump thinks the junta is best for stability and doesn’t want them to fall. And it doesn’t hurt that India & Thailand (both led by right wing authoritarians close to Trump & the US) both have decent relations with the new regime. But it’s overall a topic he couldn’t care less about.

I have been following the Rohingya genocide for a very long time so seeing the US restore this relationship as they detonate our relationship with all our allies is very, very concerning.
